AMC has announced that the final episodes of the much loved and critically acclaimed Mad Men will begin airing from April 5th in the US.
Creator Matt Weiner, who was tight-lipped as ever, appeared at a Television Critics Association panel of cast members over the weekend, said only that “each of the last seven episodes feels like a finale.”
He reiterated that the final episodes will focus on the “core cast members,” and six were on the panel with him: Don Draper (Jon Hamm), Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks), Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser), Betty Draper Francis (January Jones) and Roger Sterling (John Slattery).
Each of the cast members professed surprise at the ending of the show, which has won more awards than any program in basic cable history.
“But I’ve always been surprised by everything Matt has written,” said Moss. “I was surprised and pleased.”
Jones said she read the final script “and just started crying” — not because of what happens to Betty, but because “it’s over … I cried a lot the last few weeks.”
Jon Hamm concluded: “Oh, yes, I’m thrilled that it ended. Thrilled to be unemployed. Thrilled that I will never see any of these people again. Great, that’s really great.”
No official word on when Sky will screen the final episodes in the UK, but expect them very soon after their US airdates.
