Andy Weir’s Artemis picked up by 20th Century Fox

Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, has a new book coming out which had already been acquired by Fox and New Regency to adapt to film.

Titled Artemis, is is described as a near-future sci-fi thriller about a young woman who becomes entangled in a conspiracy on Artemis, the only colony on the moon. Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood will produce through Fox’s Genre Films.

Fox made the announcement with Crown Publishing Group, also revealing that the Artemis book will be released on November 14 this year. The Martian was Weir’s first book became a bestseller and gained an adaptation by Ridley Scott in 2015 with Matt Damon in the lead role.

“I’m really excited about Artemis,” Weir said. “I got to do the science-dork stuff I love, but this time with a much more complex and character-driven plot. It’s a big stretch for me, but I think it came out well. Hopefully the readers will agree.”

The official synopsis for Artemis reads:

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you’re not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you’ve got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she’s stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.
