As the fearsome warrior Thena in Marvel Studios’ Eternals, it only seems fitting that Angelina Jolie has stood up and addressed the reports that the blockbuster film won’t be receiving a release in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar, calling the decision to pull the film due to the inclusion of a same-sex couple “sad” and “ignorant”.
Speaking at a roundtable event ahead of the film’s Australian release, Jolie told news.com.au of her pride at Marvel for refusing to cut the scenes in order to obtain a release, but also spoke about how she was upset that those audiences wouldn’t get to see Eternals because of ignorance, saying “I’m sad for [those audiences]. And I’m proud of Marvel for refusing to cut those scenes out. I still don’t understand how we live in a world today where there’s still [people who] would not see the family Phastos has and the beauty of that relationship and that love. How anybody is angry about it, threatened by it, doesn’t approve or appreciate it is ignorant.”

Minor spoilers lay ahead, but in Eternals Brian Tyree Henry’s superhero Phastos and his husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman) share a kiss, which has led to some countries pulling the film from the schedules due to their strict censoring of LGBTQ+ issues and representation.
