Witches unite! The iconic witch-based series Bewitched is returning, but this time in an animated format.
Based on the original 1964 series, the new animated Bewitched reboot is heading to us from Sony Pictures Television, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Bewitched follows a witch named Samantha who marries a mortal man Darrin Stephens, and attempts to find a balance between the two lives. The series also included their daughter Tabitha Stevens and the mischievous grandmother, Endora. It ran from 1964-72 and spawned a 2005 feature film.
Little is known about the project, but it will focus on Samantha and Darrin’s 13-year-old daughter, Tabitha Stevens. She’ll live a double life as she attends middle school while secretly enrolling in a magical academy run by her grandmother, Endora.
Sony Pictures Television executive Joe D’Ambrosia describes the animated Bewitched reboot as “Hannah Montana meets Harry Potter.” D’Ambrosia issued the following statement:
“There’s such a vast history at Sony Pictures Television with properties that we could play around with and reinvent, introducing a whole new generation of kids to them.”
The Bewitched animated series will join an animated take on The Partridge Family in Sony Pictures Television’s new slate.
THR notes both projects are currently in early development and do not have writers attached due to the WGA strike.
