After some harsh words from An American Werewolf in London director John Landis, it’s the turn of Fight Club helmer David Fincher to shoot down the work of Marvel Studios. In an interview with Yellow King Film Boy, Fincher took issue with the often light-hearted, and less-risky storytelling of Marvel’s ongoing shared universe. “Look, there’s a very large talent pool of people who don’t feel there’s much for them in terms of sustenance working for Marvel. And I think that if we can make a playground for them that is thoughtful, adult, interesting, complex, challenging stories and figure out ways to pull them into it, there’s a chance at something that isn’t lassoed and hogtied by three acts.” Read more here.

Landis and Fincher may not be fans of Marvel, but Clerks director Kevin Smith is full of praise for “competitors” DC Films. Speaking with Screen Rant Smith said, “I’m a forty-seven-year-old man, so I grew up in an era where there were no comic book movies. And then every once in awhile you’d get one, and it was like water in a desert. You’d get Batman in 1989, or Blade or something like that. So now, we live in an era where they’re like, ‘Hey, we’re not even gonna do an interconnected DC universe. We’re just gonna let Martin Scorsese produce a flick where Leonardo DiCaprio might play the Joker.’ That’s exciting. So, to me, I’m like, the more the merrier… I know they’re deviating from the Marvel template of, like, ‘We’ll make a bunch of characters, and then a reunion movie. Buncha characters, reunion movie.’ Instead, Warner Bros. seem to be going with, ‘Well, we tried that, and we’re gonna keep doing it on the side, but we’re not gonna limit ourselves. We’re gonna do a bunch of other interesting things.’ They’re trying to forge their way in the superhero space. So I think it’s interesting, I’m not against that at all.” Read more here.
It’s more praise for the DC Extended Universe now, with Jared Leto telling Collider about his love for Suicide Squad 2 director Gavin O’Connor. “I think he’s a really gifted filmmaker and I really love his work,” he said. Read more here.
Since the announcement of Judge Dredd: Mega City One, there has been a big push for Karl Urban to reprise his 2012 Dredd role. In an interview hyping Thor: Ragnarok, Urban has laid out what it will take for him to suit up again. “I’ve had many discussions with them about my involvement of which I am interested, and I said to them, ‘Listen, if you write a character that has a function and a purpose and contributes to the overall story, then I might be very interested in reprising that role.’ I certainly wouldn’t want to step into it and just pay lip service to the movie. There has to be some material there that warrants further exploration of that character. So the ball’s in their court.” Read more here.
