Last month, Marvel Comics announced that Sam Wilson would be taking over the mantle of Captain America in a new series entitled All-New Captain America, and during an interview with Comic Book, Anthony Mackie – who played Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier – has spoken about the possibility of the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking a page out of its 616 counterpart.
“I don’t know [if Sam will become Captain America in the MCU]. I think if it goes that way in the movies that it would take a long time, because there’s so many evolutions before that. You know, I’m excited to see Sebastian Stan play Cap. I think Sebastian’s a great actor. But I love seeing Chris Evans as Cap, so I feel like they can go any way they want. I’m enjoying my part beside Cap. I’m in no rush to be Cap.”
With regards to Sebastian Stan, Mackie is referring to the comic book storyline where Bucky replaced Steve Rogers following the ‘Death of Captain America’ arc, and with Sebastian Stan reportedly contracted for seven more Marvel movies, as opposed to Chris Evans’ two, there’s been a lot of speculation that a variation of this storyline could play out on the big screen. However, if the call came, Mackie admitted that he’d jump at the chance, stating “First up for duty! First up for duty!”.
Would you like to see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson taking over as Captain America if and when Chris Evans decides to call it a day, or would Sebastian Stan’s Bucky be a better choice?
Mackie will reportedly reprise the role of the Falcon for Avengers: Age of Ultron and will also be back for Captain America 3, which goes head to head with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on May 6th 2016.
