Dolph Lundgren, who played King Nereus, the father of Amber Heard’s Mera, in the first Aquaman, has hinted at when the upcoming sequel could begin filming in the UK while also officially confirming his return to the DC Extended Universe.
“I may be doing Aquaman 2 this summer, shooting in London,” Lundgren said during a virtual Wizard World panel (via ComicBook). “And that’s coming out the following year in the theatres, they hope.”
Lundgren continued to describe his role in the first Aquaman as a great experience despite his discomfort from being strapped into the harness for the long shoot days.
“[Aquaman] was certainly a new experience. The only water I ever saw was in my bottle of Evian that I drank. There was no water on set. It was really very dry,” Lundgren said. “So you hang in the harness all day — five, six, seven, eight hours a day — and you move your legs in a certain way, you talk, and you move around, and then your hair is added later in the computer. So it’s very, very tedious, but it’s a different experience. And it was fun to work with all the great actors — there’s [Willem] Dafoe, and Patrick Wilson, and of course, Jason Momoa.”
Although plot details are being kept under wraps, director James Wan has claimed Aquaman 2 will “more serious” and “more relevant” as well as continuing to implement some of his horror sensibilities.
Aquaman 2 is set to be directed by James Wan with returning cast members Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master) and Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus). The film is currently scheduled to release in theatres on December 16th, 2022.
