Are We Now Entering the Era of Superhero Games?

February 16, 2022 by admin

The trends for gaming circle about as often as they do across other types of media. We have seen fantasy and sci-fi each take their turn to come forward, plus the rise of subgenres such as those concerning a zombie apocalypse. Could we now enter an era of superhero games?

The Rise of Marvel

In cinema, the superhero sector has really become a genre in its own right. The champion of this change has undoubtedly been Marvel. They have been pushing out multiple films for years at this point, and have also developed successful TV shows.

Through this, they have been able to create a great collection of media available across both the large and small screens. This has generated a host of fans interested in not just Marvel but the superhero genre in general. Such a following could cause people to expand their horizons beyond Marvel and even what their rivals DC has to offer. There is much more to the superhero world than what these two giants have to offer, and so it has caused many to think about what the gaming world might offer.

Superhero Games as They Currently Stand

Of course, there is already quite a library of superhero games already on the market for people to try. Characters like Superman and Batman are massive parts of pop culture, and so they can attract audiences who might not even be interested in the traditional superhero format. Just as someone might try playing a game on the GG Poker platform (https://ggpoker.com) without tuning into a poker match or even playing with friends, so are there people out there who might love the mechanics and story of a superhero game without ever actually watching one of the films or reading a comic book from which the franchise was born.

Many superhero games tend to be tie-ins to films that are being released. However, within that, there are some companies that are creating unique games with these well-known characters. Some of these games are even counted as among the best made, with unique mechanics and detailed combat unlike what we can see in other games. There is definitely a market for superhero games, but what form would this take?

A Gap in the Market

What the industry could benefit from is a full, detailed RPG that would allow people to play as a fully customisable hero of their choice. This could take the form of an MMO, but equally would work as a full single game.

The struggle here would be applying limitations to make it as balanced a game as possible. The scope of what such a game could look like is massive, and so it would no doubt take many years of development. What we might see in the meantime is more original games with a single hero at the centre of them. Be they platformers, RPGs, or even a strategy game, there is a market for superhero games that developers need to consider moving into in the future.

Superhero games offer the player the chance to be the hero they have always wanted to be. We can become a grizzled warrior or mage in any number of fantasy titles, or we can explore the stars and fight off aliens in sci-fi games. So, why can we not fight crime and save the city with a good superhero game? With several superhero games due to come to the market in 2022, we could finally see this genre of game really take off amongst consumers. If this is a type of gaming that could interest you, you should definitely check up on some of the big superhero releases coming our way this year.
