Earlier this year it was announced that WWE Superstar John Cena was in talks to team with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and Paramount Pictures for an adaptation of the cult video game series Duke Nukem.
Well, if that was something you were looking forward to, we’ve got some bad news for you as Variety is reporting that the project is no longer moving forward in that iteration, and Gearbox Software is instead teaming up with producer Jean-Julien Baronnet (Assassin’s Creed) to develop a new version.
“He’s a parody of 1980s action heroes and he’s like Deadpool in terms of being able to break the fourth wall,” said Sean Haran, vice president of Gearbox. “We see a lot of humor in his confronting the values of today while trying to save the world.”
“Duke is exactly the kind of very blunt character that we need in the world today,” adds Baronnett, who has recently been meeting with writers to put together a package for the potential film.
