As James Cameron begins production on Avatar 2 and its sequels, the official Facebook page has announced the casting of several young actors in the series. They will portray children the children of Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri as well as children of the Metkayina Clan, led by Cliff Curtis. Only one of them will remain a human, born at the military base Hell’s Gate from the first film.
The new cast members include Jack Champion (Javier “Spider” Socorro), Trinity Bliss (Tuktirey of the Sully Family), Bailey Bass (Tsireya of the Metkayina Clan), Jamie Flatters (Neteyam of the Sully Family), Britain Dalton (Lo’ak of the Sully Family), Filip Geljo (Aonung of the Metkayina Clan), and Duane Evans Jr (Rotxo of the Metkayina Clan).
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, producer Jon Landau said “We never had this youthful element before, and that brings a different kind of energy to the film. They represent the future generation of Pandora and play a very significant role — not just in this movie but throughout all the movies.”
In terms of the production, James Cameron is being quite ambitious with shooting his four Avatar films back-to-back, aiming for release dates in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025. Cameron was recently interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter and asked how he planned to deal with such a consistent shooting schedule.
“Avatar 2 and 3 will be captured together and then [go through postproduction] sequentially,” Cameron told them. “Then we go back and capture 4 and 5. They’re all written and they’re all designed, so we literally hit the ground running the day after Avatar 3 comes out, starting capture on 4 and 5 and then post on those and release those. That’s the plan. So, it’s kind of a two-and-two structure.”
