Unopposed, Avatar: The Way of Water cruised passed $620 million at the domestic box office this weekend, and in the process became the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time with $2.117 billion globally.
On Friday James Cameron’s behemoth overtook Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.071 billion) to sit behind only it’s predecessor Avatar ($2.92 billion), Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion) and Titanic ($2.19 billion) on the list of the biggest grossing movies of all-time.
Its weekend take of $15.7 million was enough to secure the top-spot for the seventh week in a row, where its nearest competitor was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which also displayed its nine-lives staying power at the box-office, dropping just 11% for a weekend take of $10.5 million, and a domestic total of $140 million.
There were also decent holdover performances by Tom Hanks drama A Man Called Otto, which added $6.7 million to its domestic gross of $46 million, and Universal’s killer-doll hit M3GAN, which earned $6.3 million, taking its North-American tally to $81.9 million.
Those are numbers that Brandon Cronenberg’s R-rated Infinity Pool can only dream of, with the much ballyhooed Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth horror only managing to gross $2.7 million from 1,835 cinemas, earn a poor C- CinemaScore from audiences, and land in eight place on the chart.
