Given the enormous box office they’ve generated for Marvel with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War (plus another billion or two coming in next year with Avengers: Endgame), directors Anthony and Joe Russo will have their pick of the projects when they finish up with Avengers 4 and turn their attention outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As yet, there’s been no indication as to what their next movie may be, but during a recent Q&A with Collider, the filmmakers have expressed their interest in exploring another Disney mega-franchise in the Star Wars saga:
“We grew up on Star Wars like everyone else did. I went to the theater when I was 11 years old to see Empire Strikes Back and sat in the theater from 11:30 in the morning until 10:00 at night and watched it back to back to back. So it was a huge influence on us growing up. Of course we’d love to work, at some point, in the Star Wars universe, but right now our heads are in the middle of another movie.”
This isn’t the first time that the Russos have brought up Star Wars, and with Disney and Lucasfilm’s plans for the franchise seemingly up in the air post-Star Wars: Episode IX, it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if we did see the filmmakers granted the keys to the galaxy far, far away…
