Avengers: Endgame writers say “timing” was why TV characters like the Defenders weren’t involved

November 7, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writers of Avengers: Endgame, say that TV marvel characters didn’t show up in the movies because of timing difficulties.

Avengers: Endgame was packed to the brim with superheroes, bringing forth a whole host of warriors to the battleground for the climactic fight against Thanos. The notable exceptions, of course, were the TV-based heroes like The Defenders.

Why couldn’t these characters show up in the film? Well, in an interview with Screen Rant, writer Christopher Markus revealed the answer: “At the very beginning, we were like, ‘That is possible.’ But it came down to, frankly, just timing. The sequential timing of the TV versus the movies; I wouldn’t even know where they are in their chronology to use them. And then for us to say that some of them blipped or didn’t blip is just fucking with five writers’ rooms.”

McFeely added: “We already were demanding so much from the audience. Like, if you want to enjoy this the best way it possibly can be enjoyed, you gotta watch 21 other movies. Oh, but wait, and several episodes of streaming services you need to pay money for.”

It would certainly have been difficult logistically but there’s no question many fans would have appreciated seeing the likes of Daredevil and Jessica Jones appear on the big screen. Perhaps now that Disney+ is in the mix, future team-ups will be more in sync.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp), Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie).
