Assuming Disney’s planned takeover of 21st Century Fox’s film and TV assets goes through, Marvel Studios will find itself with the vast majority of its characters at its disposal for use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While this is surely any Marvel fan’s dream, the studio will have to tackle the difficult question of how to go about introducing not only an influx of new characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties to the existing MCU, but also elements such as the mutant X-Gene. And that’s before we get to whether or not we’ll see a full reboot in terms of casting, or a soft reboot of sorts where certain actors are retained (i.e. Deadpool).
Asked for their thoughts on that very dilemma, Avengers: Infinity War co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo offered one suggestion, stating that: “If Disney’s takeover of Fox goes through, there are a lot more characters to work with all of a sudden, it might be interesting to do something like Secret Wars.”
If you’re unaware, there’s been two Secret Wars events in Marvel comic book history: the first, released between 1984 and 1985, saw the Beyonder transporting many of the heroes and villains of the Marvel universe to Battleword, pitting them against each other; the second followed a similar storyline, however it brought together characters from the main 616 Marvel universe with various other alternate universes such as Ultimate Marvel, Marvel 2099, Age of Apocalypse, and ultimately combined them into one cohesive Earth Prime.
Marvel will need to go big to top Avengers: Infinity War, and a Secret Wars storyline would certainly be a fascinating prospect – it could, in theory, even feature the likes of the original and First Class X-Men casts, previous Fantastic Four teams, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, Ben Affleck’s Daredevil, and hell – even David Hasselhoff’s Nick Fury!
