Minor Avengers: Infinity War spoilers follow…
Earlier this month, Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo talked about Thanos’ motivations for eliminating half of all life in the universe, revealing that it ties into the backstory of his time on Titan when he recommended exterminating half of the population to save the other half following a cataclysmic shift.
This of course differs from his reasoning in the comic book epic The Infinity Gauntlet, where his actions are designed to win the affections of Lady Death. And, speaking to Coming Soon on the promotional tour for Infinity War, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have revealed that Death was considered for the movie, although ultimately they chose to tie his motivations into his home world in order to make him more relatable to audiences.
“At the very beginning, just because it’s such a focal point of the comics, we talked about it, but I think pretty quickly… it is not something that brings you closer to his motivation,” said McFeely. “It’s not something where the average moviegoer says, ‘Now I can kinda empathize with him because he’s in love with Death!’ But I think we took that passion that he has… he really is in love with Death in the comics! He’s a lovelorn, kinda sad little fella. We wanted to maintain that level of emotion on his part, just redirected.”
