Avengers: Infinity War writers discuss Thanos and his “hero’s journey”

May 4, 2018 by Samuel Brace

The writers of Avengers: Infinity War have commented on Thanos and what they describe as the character’s “hero’s journey”.

Those who have now seen Infinity War, which is a significant amount of people at this point, will know that Thanos isn’t your typical bad guy, that there’s a little more to the Titan than indiscriminate killing and villainous posturing.

Thanos certain takes up a central focus in the movie and actually has the most complete character arc in the entire film. This is something that the writers of Infinity War, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, spoke about to Buzzfeed News, and how he is the character that got what he wanted in the film:

“This is the hero’s journey for Thanos,” McFeely explained. “By the end of the hero’s journey, our main character, our protagonist — at least, in this case — gets what he wants.”

The writers also spent plenty of time deliberating on just when Thanos would snap his fingers and utilise the infinity gauntlet, before realising that the end of the movie was the right move:

“Even if the end is a tragedy, we wanted it to be definitive,” Markus said and that they couldn’t end the film with Thanos still needing to collect one more stone. “To say, ‘Oh my gosh, what’s he going to do?! He’s only got one [Infinity Stone] left! I wonder if he’ll get the other one!’ That just seemed like ‘Tune in next week’ jerking around.”
