The writers of Avengers: Infinity War have revealed the reason why the Netflix MCU heroes didn’t appear in the film.
Infinity War was billed as the biggest team-up event in the franchise’s history and it certainly delivered. However, there were notable absentees from the roster of heroes present, including Netflix’s Defenders.
Explaining their decision not to include the likes of Daredevil or Jessica Jones, writers of Infinity War, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, have said that they didn’t want to bring them in just for the sake of it during Infinity War’s New York set scenes.
“We talk about that all the time,” McFeely told Collider. “I don’t know anything about animosity [between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television]. In a movie this big, we certainly had the conversation, ‘Should we put Luke Cage in this? Here we are in New York.’ That kind of stuff. As you could probably tell, it would be just a glorified cameo at this point. We’re trying to honor the MCU movies and if we then further tell the audience, ‘Oh, you should also have a good knowledge from this streaming service over here that you may or may not be subscribing to.’ That’s really asking a lot. We’re already asking a lot.”
Although some fans are disappointed by not seeing these characters, there would also be others who were annoyed by a tiny cameo appearance, as McFeely notes: “You’ll have just as many people going, ‘That’s all you gave Luke Cage!'”
