Ballerina Overdrive hopes to become the next John Wick or Violent Night, and Deadline reports that Lena Headey, Yara Shahidi, Isabela Merced, Lana Condor, Millicent Simmonds, and Iris Apatow are set to star in the film.
Vicky Jewson will helm Ballerina Overdrive, with a script penned by Kate Freund. Jewson is best known for her recent work on The Witcher: Blood Origin; she also directed Lady Godiva and Netflix’s Close. Deadpool and John Wick director David Leitch will produce alongside Kelly McCormick and Annie Marter.
The film’s story follows a troupe of ballerinas who find themselves fighting for survival as they attempt to escape from a remote inn after their bus breaks down on the way to a dance competition.
87North is producing the film, the studio and action design company founded by Leitch and McCormick. They are behind the hit action films Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw, Nobody, Bullet Train, and John Wick. Their most recent outing, Violent Night, was another smash hit for the studio, earning rave reviews, $70 million worldwide, and an upcoming sequel.
Stunt designers Heidi Moneymaker and Renae Moneymaker (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) will create the film’s dance-based action choreography.
