Multi-talented writer/director/producer Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy) has officially set the cast to his upcoming FX pilot The Bastard Executioner. With SOA actress Katey Sagal now onboard, as well as Stephen Moyer from True Blood, let’s just say we’re enthusiastically intrigued.
The Bastard Executioner may only be in the pilot stages right now but that doesn’t me we can’t start getting excited. In the lead role is an unknown Australian theater actor by the name of Lee Jones and according to Deadline, Moyer, Sagal and Sam Spruell (The Huntsman) will play major roles in the period drama. Also appearing onscreen will be Sutter himself, playing a regular character (if it gets picked up to series) who rarely speaks and does not show his face.
The Bastard Executioner follows a warrior knight (Jones) in King Edward I’s charge who has been beaten down by the tragedy of war. He vows to lay down his arms but when the bloodshed calls him back into combat he wields his mighty sword once more.
The pilot is written by Sutter and is set to be directed by SOA’s Paris Barclay, with production set to begin March 19 in Wales. Also cast for the pilot (which will likely go to series) is Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Timothy V. Murphy, Danny Sapani, Darren Evans, Sarah White and Sarah Sweeney. Matthew Rhys (The Americans) is also expected to guest star in the pilot and play a recurring character in the show provided it gets picked up.
