Per Deadline, Ivory Aquino has joined the cast of HBO Max’s upcoming Batgirl movie as Alysia Yeoh, a transgender bartender, an aspiring chef, and best friend to the titular superhero. Yeoh will be the first major transgender character ever to appear in a live-action film adaptation of DC comics.
Aquino is best known for turns in the Netflix series When They See Us and Tales of the City, and in ABC’s When We Rise. She’s also featured in series including Blue Bloods, FBI: Most Wanted, New Amsterdam and High Maintenance, as well as Isabel Sandoval’s Lingua Franca.

Batgirl is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life) and stars Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, J.K. Simmons (Justice League) as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Micheal Keaton (The Flash) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol) as Firefly, and Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), Rebecca Front (Avenue 5), Corey Johnson (Morbius) and Ethan Kai (Killing Eve) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
