Having wrapped filming at the start of the month, Batgirl star Leslie Grace has now been chatting to Variety about Warner Bros. and DC Film’s upcoming HBO Max movie – and in particular her excitement about getting to suit up as Barbara Gordon’s crime-fighting alter-ego alongside Michael Keaton’s Batman.
“It was wild for everyone,” said Leslie with regards to seeing Keaton on set in full Dark Knight costume, something Keaton himself teased with a behind-the-scenes photo . “Our directors were like two little kids. They’re legit Batman nerds openly. I couldn’t even believe that I was sharing space with Batman. I want to say more, but I can’t. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really. And J.K. Simmons playing my dad. That’s my pop.”
Although Batgirl has only just finished filming, Grace went on to reveal that there’s been some early talks about continuing Barbara’s story, stating that: “There’s definitely some talks about what it could be… We’ve already been talking about where do we take this from here because there’s so much that happens in this film. There are a lot of different themes in the plot that we touch on. It’s not just the action. There’s a love story. There’s this father-daughter relationship. There’s looking at the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing the color between things.”
Batgirl was initially expected to premiere on HBO Max at the end of this year; however, Warner Bros. recently delayed The Flash – which will introduce Keaton’s Bat into the DCEU fold as a replacement for Ben Affleck – into 2023, and the recent controversy surrounding Ezra Miller has complicated matters further with the studio said to have “hit pause” on its projects featuring the actor. If and how any of this will impact Batgirl remains to be seen.
Batgirl is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life) and stars Leslie Grace (In the Heights) as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, J.K. Simmons (Justice League) as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Micheal Keaton (The Flash) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol) as Firefly, Ivory Aquino (When They See Us) as Alysia Yeoh and Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), Rebecca Front (Avenue 5), Corey Johnson (Morbius) and Ethan Kai (Killing Eve) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
Batgirl is set to premiere directly on HBO Max as an HBO Max Original.
