20th Century Fox is in talks with Ben Affleck to direct and star in an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution. Affleck will also produce the film alongside Matt Damon, Jennifer Todd and the Agatha Christie estate.
The film follows a lawyer representing a man accused of murdering a wealthy widow who had left him her estate. The suspect’s wife is called as a witness for the prosecution because she was married to another man when she wed the defendant, and soon fingers her husband for the murder in order to clear her conscience.
Witness for the Prosecution was previously adapted for the big screen in 1957, with Billy Wilder directing a cast that included Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton.
Affleck has recently wrapped his latest directorial offering Live By Night, and is also set to direct a standalone Batman movie for Warner Bros.; he will next be seen on screen in The Accountant, and reprises the role of The Dark Knight for next year’s Justice League.
