With Live By Night, Affleck looks to continue his feature-length directorial winning streak, which began in 2007 with Gone Baby Gone and has continued ever since.
Judging based off of the trailer alone, Live By Night looks like a real winner, boasting an outstanding cast, gorgeous cinematography and superb writing. Affleck is wearing more hats this time around than ever before, as this marks the first feature film that he is starring in, directing, writing and producing.
While most people are still more familiar with Affleck for his work in front of the camera, from his career-making turn in Good Will Hunting to his recent work as Batman in the DCEU’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, audience members have been coming out in higher numbers with each subsequent Affleck-helmed effort. To clarify, Gone Baby Gone earned $34 million worldwide at the box office in 2007, The Town brought in $154 million in 2010 and Argo garnered $232 million.
After Live By Night, Affleck will be taking on Witness for the Prosecution and the highly-anticipated Batman solo film, the latter of which is sure to outgross all of his aforementioned films and could further cement him as one of the greatest directors working today.
Live by Night is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.
Joining Affleck in the cast of Live By Night are Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller, Brendan Gleeson, Titus Welliver, Robert Glenister, Chris Cooper, Elle Fanning, Remo Girone, Max Casella and Anthony Michael Hall. It is set for release on January 13th, 2017.
