Deadline has revealed that Benedict Cumberbatch will star in Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow’s World War II drama War Magician from StudioCanal.
Cumberbatch will play Jasper Maskelyne, “a British illusionist who used magic to defeat Erwin Rommel in World War II.” The story will follow Maskelyne and “a ‘magic gang’ from Africa, Europe and the Middle East who conspired with Maskelyne and a female military intelligence officer to defeat the Nazis.”
The script is being written by Nicholas Mariani with early drafts written by Richard Cordiner and Gary Whitta. The film is based on the book by David Fisher and will be produced by Studiocanal, Landscape Entertainment and Trevorrow’s Metronome.
Benedict Cumberbatch is currently shooting the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, while his latest film The Courier opens this week [read our review here]. Next up from Trevorrow meanwhile is Jurassic World: Dominion, which is set to open in June 2022.
