Your eyes aren’t deceiving you, you absolutely read that headline correctly. According to Variety, American Idol and The X Factor producer Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment is teaming up with Animal Logic Entertainment for a feature-length film featuring the 1930s cartoon icon, Betty Boop.
The film is described as a “music-driven hybrid animated comedy,” and has been in the works for several months now. Here’s what Cowell had to say about the project:
“Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world – I’m thrilled to be working with her. Betty, I’ve worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”
Mark Fleischer, the owner of the Betty Boop rights and CEO of Fleischer Studios, said,
“I am delighted to partner with Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic. Their energy, creativity, and playfulness make them a perfect fit for Betty Boop.”
Animal Logic’s credits include The LEGO Movie, Happy Feet, The Great Gatsby, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, 300, and Iron Man 3, so on the animation and effects front, Betty is in good hands. At this point in time no writer or director has been attached to the project, and no other plot details were given.
The last time Betty Boop made it to the big screen, and uttered her famous line, “Boop-oop-a-doop!” was in 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
