After decades of rumour and speculation, it came as quite the shock this month to hear that not only was the fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie a go, but that Eddie Murphy was already on set with cameras actually rolling on the now-titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.
With the sequel now in production under Australian director Mark Molloy, Deadline has revealed that Murphy’s streetwise Detroit cop Axel Foley is calling in some back-up, with both Judge Reinhold and John Ashton on board to return as Detective Billy Rosewood and Sgt. John Taggart.
Reinhold starred alongside Murphy in all three of the original films, while Axel Foley will mark Ashton’s return to the franchise for the first time since 1987’s Beverly Hills Cop II.
Also set to reprise their role from the first two films is Paul Reiser as Detective Jeffrey Friedman, while Bronson Pinchot will be back as Serge after appearing as the fan favourite sassy art gallery salesmen in the first and third movies.
Along with the returning faces, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley has also cast Taylour Paige (Zola) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Pinocchio) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. Molloy is directing from a script by Will Beall (Aquaman), with Netflix distributing. As yet, there’s no word on a release date, but expect it to arrive at some point in 2023.
