The success of Parasite not only highlighted the strength of Korean cinema as whole, it also meant that many people had their eyes opened to an entire Bong Joon Ho back-catalogue which they could plough through during lockdown.
Well, now that everyone has hopefully been educated on the brilliance of Memories of Murder and Mother, we can look forward to Bong’s next project, with the news that he has finished writing one of the two scripts he has been working on.
While speaking on The Director’s Cut podcast (via Esquire) he revealed that he “finished one last week” and that “it feels like I’m splitting my brain in half left and right writing these two scripts”. Bong continued to say that the first script was a Korean film “located in Seoul and has unique elements of horror and action. It’s difficult to define the genre of my films”. On his second script, he said that the film will be in English and “is a drama film based on a true event that happened in 2016. Of course, I won’t know until I finish the script, but it has to be set half in the UK and half in the US”.
It’s not much to go on, but even those snippets are enough to get you excited about the Oscar-winning directors next project.
