Broken Lizard is back and venturing into the fantasy genre.
The comedy troupe will helm Quasi, a satirical take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame, originally a French Gothic novel by Victor Hugo from 1831.
The story will reportedly follow “a hapless hunchback who only yearns for love but finds himself in the middle of a murderous feud between the Pope and the King of France when each orders the hunchback to kill the other.”
Quasi stars Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske and Adrianne Palicki. Heffernan will direct the project and penned the script alongside Lemme, Chandrasekhar, Soter, and Stolhanske.
Broken Lizard is best known for their cult classics like Super Troopers, Club Dread, and Beerfest. Their last film was Super Troopers 2 in 2018.
This film marks their first attempt at the fantasy genre after previous spoofing stoner comedies, road trip movies, and horror films. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is prime for a new adaptation as the mainstream hasn’t seen a recent attempt since Disney’s 1996 musical film.
