Shortly after the box office success of Freddy vs. Jason, rumours started to fly that a sequel could feature the famed Deadite hunter Ash from the Evil Dead series. Jeff Katz even wrote a treatment for the movie which eventually became the comic book series Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, but the film never materialised. In a recent Reddit AMA, Bruce Campbell answered the question horror fans have been asking for a while now: what the hell happened?
“I’ll be honest with you. I’m not real interested in cross overs,” he admitted. “One of the main reasons why Ash vs. Jason vs. Freddy did not come to pass is because we couldn’t control any other character other than Ash. That felt like a creatively bankrupt way to go. Not to mention, you’re splitting the proceeds three ways with partners you might not want.”
This is a similar answer to what Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi has given in the past, and the documentaries Never Sleep Again and Crystal Lake Memories feature comments from Robert Englund that back this up. Other crossovers had been discussed as a sequel for Freddy vs. Jason, with an early draft of the movie featuring Pinhead from Hellraiser.
