While fans of the Evil Dead franchise have patiently been waiting since the 2013 reboot for the next feature film, producer Bruce Campbell has teased that filming on another Evil Dead film could start later this year but confirms “it won’t have Ash.”
“We’re producing more Evil Dead movies. Maybe one later this year,” Campbell shared this past weekend at Fan Expo Vancouver (via ComicBook). “Sam Raimi’s handpicked the next guy to make another creepy Evil Dead film. It just won’t have Ash. There are more stories to tell.”
Unfortunately, Campbell has reiterated in these comments that he has retired the role of Ashley ‘Ash’ J. Williams after the popular TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead came to an end after three seasons. However, Campbell will be working behind the camera and serving as a producer on the next film.
The Evil Dead franchise spawned two feature film sequels following the original 1981 movie with Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, with all three starring Campbell’s Ash and directed by Sam Raimi. In 2013, director Fede Alvarez revived the franchise alongside producers Campbell and Raimi with a soft reboot which kept the same concept from the original of a group of friends in a cabin in the woods who read from the Necromonicon and awaken the evil lurking in the woods. Campbell then returned for the Ash vs. Evil Dead series.
