Bryan Fuller talks Star Trek: Discovery exit, will not be involved in the series going forward

December 3, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Last month came the rather surprising announcement that Bryan Fuller would no longer be serving as showrunner on CBS’ upcoming Star Trek: Discovery TV series, passing things over to Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts (Pushing Daisies) to allow him to continue his work on American Gods for Starz and Amazing Stories for NBC.

During an interview with Newsweek, Fuller has explained his departure, and revealed that while he retains an executive producer credit on the show, he’ll not have any further involvement beyond his initial vision for the mythology and overall story arc:

“Ultimately, with my responsibilities [elsewhere], I could not do what CBS needed to have done in the time they needed it done for Star Trek. It felt like it was best for me to focus on landing the plane with American Gods and making sure that was delivered in as elegant and sophisticated a fashion as I could possibly do. I’m not involved in production, or postproduction, so I can only give them the material I’ve given them and hope that it is helpful for them. I’m curious to see what they do with it.”

Star Trek: Discovery is expected to get underway in May, with a cast that so far includes Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Doug Jones (Hellboy), Anthony Rapp (Road Trip).
