Captain America 3 writers share thoughts on potential villains

July 24, 2014 by James Garcia

Captain America: The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are currently hard at work on penning the screenplay for Cap’s third solo outing, which is slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2016. They were recently interviewed by ComicBookMovie, and were asked about what villains they would like to introduce next.

They obviously couldn’t say much, but did give a bit of insight into two villains in particular: Flag Smasher and MODOK. One of them they would love to see brought into the fold (if they could make him grounded enough), while the other they feel they could never do justice. And you’ll never believe which one is which:

Markus: “That’s a little tricky because some of them are theoretically very good. Some of them have great concepts but are really tough to pull off visually. Like Flag-Smasher who wants to destroy nations, and that’s a terrorist and seems like a guy you could work with, but he literally has a cape and flies on flying skies, and then you’re like, ‘Ok, do we take away everything?’ and then he’s just a guy and we’re not fully portraying the character. They’re tricky to bring across. I always wanted to do MODOK., but it seems like we’re leaving our grounded political arena way behind when you’ve got a giant floating head on a rocket chair.”

McFeely: “Exactly!”

Markus: “I’ll do it one day, I’m telling you people!”

I think it’s funny that out of these two villains, Markus is most interested in giving MODOK a shot. Now, that doesn’t mean it will ever happen, but if these guys could make someone like Arnim Zola or Batroc the Leaper work in the more “grounded,” political-minded climate of the Captain America films, there’s always room for some cool nods to MODOK and Flag Smasher.

What do you think of their comments? Who would you like to see as the villain in Captain America 3? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
