With the release of Captain Marvel fast approaching, Fandango is reporting that the Brie Larson-headlined Marvel blockbuster is outselling Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Deadpool in ticket presales.
The online ticket service is reporting that two weeks out from release, Captain Marvel is the second-biggest preseller superhero origin story behind last year’s Black Panther (which opened in the U.S. with a huge $202 million), and the third biggest superhero movie after Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7 million domestic opening) and Black Panther.
“Captain Marvel has a great ‘90s sci-fi vibe with a tone unlike any other Marvel movie,” states Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis. “It’s one of the most unique superhero origin stories we’ve ever seen. With surging advance ticket sales, thanks partially to the positive critical reactions from this week’s first screenings, it’s clear that this ‘Cap’ has the right stuff when it comes to moviegoer appeal.”
Tracking estimates for Captain Marvel point towards a North American opening of between $100 and $120 million, but don’t be surprised if the film manages to surpass that, particularly as early reactions have been extremely positive.
Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). It is set for release on March 8th.
