Mike Flanagan has been busy with numerous projects, like winning the TIFF People’s Choice Award for The Life of Chuck, but he still has time for more Stephen King adaptations.
With confirmation that Flanagan is developing a TV version of Carrie, it seems he’s found his titular star. Rumors have swirled that Milly Shapiro will star as Carrie White, per a report from Daniel Richtman.
While that source needs to be taken with a grain of salt, fans couldn’t ask for a better pick for this iconic horror role. Shapiro is best known for her Hereditary, in which she stole the show in Ari Aster’s debut feature film. She’ll bring her signature style to this Mike Flanagan/Stephen King project, bringing to life something we’ve rarely seen in other versions of Carrie.
Sissy Spacek and Chloë Grace Moretz have both played the role, and while they brought the awkwardness needed, they both felt like models needing to “ugly it up.” While Shapiro is a striking woman, she also has the unconventional aesthetic King originally wrote.
The new take is envisioned as an 8-episode limited series format for Amazon. Samantha Sloyan (Hush) is reportedly in talks to play her mother, which is an equally important role.
Production is set to begin in the summer.
