In the lead up to her MCU debut, actress Cate Blanchett has been teasing her character Hela’s weapon making abilities.
As always there is plenty of buzz surrounding Marvel’s upcoming film slate, even for less popular properties like Thor’s solo movies.
The third film in the franchise Thor: Ragnarok seems to be going in a different direction from previous instalments, with a more comedic approach apparently being adopted.
And with the addition of new characters such as Blanchett’s villainous Hela, there should be plenty on offer to satisfy fans in what feels like the final lead up to Avengers: Infinity War.
Blanchett, in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, spoke about her character and her rather unique ability of creating weapons to dispatch her foes.
“Yeah. She’s able to manifest weapons. Her headdress can be weapons. She can manifest weapons out of different parts of her body. I won’t tell you which — I’ll leave that hanging.”

Blanchett also spoke about being the Thor franchise’s first female villain, stating: “Can you believe it? Can you believe we’re having this conversation and it’s 2017 and we’re talking about the first female villain? It’s ridiculous. There’s so much untapped potential villainy in women. It’s really exciting. I think finally it’s beginning to be acknowledged that women and men want to see a diverse array of characters, and that’s race, gender across the sexual spectrum.”
Just how dangerous Hela will be in the movie remains to be seen. Marvel has a sorry history with disposable villains so hopefully Blanchett’s character will add something more to proceedings than an insignificant one-film obstacle.
In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.
Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge and Sam Neill in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on November 3rd, 2017.
