It looks like Murphy Brown is the next U.S. sitcom set to return to the small screen, with TV Line reporting that CBS is relaunching the series with a thirteen episode season slated to air in the 2018-2019 season.
The new season – which will mark the show’s 30th anniversary – will see Candice Bergen reprising the role of Murphy Brown, a sharp-tongued, hard-hitting journalist and recovering alcoholic, and is said to take place in “a world of cable news, fake news, and a very different political and cultural climate.” Bergen will also serve as an executive producer, with original creator Diane English back on board as writer and producer.
Murphy Brown originally premiered on CBS in 1988, and ran for ten seasons through to 1998, and received a host of accolades including three Golden Globes and eighteen Emmy Awards. Featuring in the original cast alongside Bergen were Faith Ford, Pat Corley, Charles Kimbrough, Robert Pastorelli, Joe Regalbuto, Grant Shaud and Lily Tomlin.
