According to Deadline, Channing Tatum (22 Jump Street, Foxcatcher) is being eyed for a “major role” in Quentin Taratino’s latest Western The Hateful Eight, although there’s no details as to which part this major role might be.
Set to begin principal photography in January, The Hateful Eight will see Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Walton Goggins and Samuel L. Jackson reprising their roles from the live-script reading that Tarantino held earlier in the year, while Jennifer Jason Leigh has signed on to play the female lead, Daisy Domergue.
Update – It has now been confirmed that Tatum has joined the cast of the film, along with Demian Bichir (A Better Life, Machete Kills). Here’s the official logline…
The story is set six to 12 years after the Civil War in wintry Wyoming. Bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race toward the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern).
The Hateful Eight is set to arrive in December 2015, with distributors The Weinstein Company planning the widest 70mm release in over 20 years.
