If you’re in China and were hoping to see an episode of Marvel’s Agent Carter, you are out of luck. Variety reported that China’s media regulator, the State General Administration for Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) has recently blocked both Agent Carter and the series Empire from streaming in China.
One of SAPPRFT’s recent rule changes is that the entire series of an imported television series must be approved by censors before any individual episode can air in China. This rule all but ensures that Chinese air dates will be well-behind other countries air dates of new TV shows from around the world.
It remains unclear if the SAPPRFT’s recent actions are an attempt to create an overall decrease in the volume of foreign TV shows available in China. At the least these rules are an added censorship hurdle for shows to navigate before they can be accessible to viewers in China.
Will Agent Carter pass the Chinese censors? Hard to say as shows such as The Big Bang Theory have been yanked off the air with no explanation as to why.
Marvel’s Agent Carter stars Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, Chad Michael Murray as Agent Jack Thompson, Enver Gjokaj as Agent Daniel Sousa and Shea Whigham as Chief Roger Dooley.
