Here’s a twist straight out of the files housed in the basement of the FBI’s J. Edgar Hoover Building; Chris Carter has claimed that Black Panther and Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler is working on a reboot of The X-Files.
Having seemingly closed the files for good following 2018’s lacklustre revival series, it appeared that the only way we’d get to see more spooky goings-on was in FOX’s rumoured animated spin-off, which is still yet to emerge from the basement.
Now before you pack away your flashlights and take the tape from your window, series creator Chris Carter has dropped quite the reveal while appearing on CBC’s On the Coast With Gloria Macarenko, claiming that Ryan Coogler is set to work on a reboot of the The X-Files. Carter said “I just spoke to a young man… Ryan Coogler… who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”
Coogler is no stranger to reinvention, having resurrected the Rocky franchise with the phenomenally successful Creed series, so it would be quite the coup if he was shining a light on this franchise.
The X-Files was a bona fide event television that originally ran for 9 seasons between 1993 and 2001, and spawned two movies before Duchovny and Anderson reprised their roles for two limited series revivals in 2016 and 2018.
As for whether this will actually happen, you can either treat the news like a Fox Mulder “believer” or a Dana Scully “sceptic”, but hopefully the truth will be out there pretty soon. In the meantime let us know what you think by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
