Given his character’s fate in 2017’s Wonder Woman, it was certainly a surprise when it was announced that Chris Pine would be back in the role of Steve Trevor alongside Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince in the upcoming DC sequel Wonder Woman 1984 – even moreso when images arrived online showing him seemingly alive and well in the 1980s and looking rather fit and healthy for a guy approaching 100 years of age.
During an interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), Pine has been chatting about his impending return as Steve, and while he wouldn’t get into any specifics as to how he’s back, the actor did offer some insight into how the character has changed since we last saw him back during the Great War.
“What I will say about him is that he’s deeply, supremely excited,” said Pine. “He’s excited to be back with Diana. He’s excited about this world. Tonally, what’s different is, he’s not world-weary. He’s not jaded. It’s a complete 180 from the tone of the character of the first one.”
“I thought it was a nice idea,” he continues with regards to Steve being the “fish out of water” in 1984 as opposed to Gadot’s Diana in the first movie. “It’s a brilliant move on [director] Patty [Jenkins’] part. That’s just one clear indication of a big tonal shift this time out… Patty, towards the end of the first one, had been marinating on an idea. So yeah, I had an idea that I would come back. I think she may have even started to break the story while we were promoting [the first film].”
