Christopher Nolan reportedly parts ways with Warner Bros.

January 23, 2021 by Gary Collinson

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has split from Warner Bros. after almost two decades of working with the studio.

Nolan was one of the most outspoken critics of Warner Bros.’ announcement late last year that it would be simultaneously releasing its 2021 slate in theaters and on HBO Max in the United States, with the director slamming the studio and its parent company WarnerMedia for failing to consult its filmmakers and talent ahead of the decision.

Nolan’s association with Warner Bros. stretches back to 2002’s Insomnia, with the studio initially reluctant about his involvement with the Al Pacino and Robin Williams psychological thriller due to his lack of experience at the time (it was only his third feature after Following and Memento, and his first studio project).

After Insomnia, the studio then recruited him to relaunch the Batman franchise with Batman Begins, and they have remained in partnership since through The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk and last year’s Tenet.

As yet, neither party have commented to confirm or deny the report, but given Nolan’s reaction to the HBO Max news, it certainly shouldn’t come as a surprise if true.
