Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk movie confirmed, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance to star

December 28, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday rumours emerged suggesting that Christopher Nolan’s next film would be a World War II epic about the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, and now Warner Bros. has officially confirmed the reports, as well as revealing some casting details.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the film – which is based on an original screenplay from Nolan – will reunite the filmmaker with Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises), as well as featuring Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Kenneth Branagh (Wallander). However, they will play supporting roles, with Nolan looking to cast unknown actors for the leads.

“We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time,” said Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production. “Dunkirk is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma Thomas and their cast realize it on the big screen.”

Production on Dunkirk will get underway in May, with Nolan shooting on a combination of 65mm and IMAX 65mm. The film is set to hit cinemas on July 21st, 2017.
