Surprising many people, The Conjuring spin-off/prequel Annabelle was a box office success over the weekend despite poor reviews from the majority of critics (read our review here). But the possessed doll is not just on the minds of those who have watched it, as it also has grabbed the attention of Don Mancini, the creator of the Child’s Play franchise, which gave birth to famous killer doll Chucky.
In an interview with USA Today Mancini said: “I am hoping that at some future point we have Annabelle and Chucky team up. I can see that [even] in 20 years from now.”
Annabelle took an impressive $37.2 million domestically against an estimated $6.5 million budget. It’s unlikely that it will reach the levels of The Conjuring, which made $318 million worldwide, but the killer doll has certainly proved her worth.
Chucky hasn’t been on the big screen since 2004’s Seed of Chucky, but the horror icon made a straight-to-DVD comeback in the well-received Curse of Chucky last year with rumours of another Child’s Play movie in development.
This wouldn’t be the first time that two horror franchises crossed paths, with Freddy vs. Jason tearing up cinema screens in 2003. But with that said, it took a good twenty years to get that movie made. Mancini of course is well aware of this, but has said this his franchise team would be “very into it”.
“If I were Annabelle, I’d be watching my back,” Mancini joked.
Annabelle is out now in the US and October 10th in the UK. Listen to our review below:
