Claes Bang to play Dracula for Sherlock creators

November 30, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having been announced last year, Sherlock co-creators Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat’s Bram Stoker adaptation Dracula has now found its lead, with Claes Bang (The Square) signing on to portray the legendary bloodsucker.

“I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock,” said Bang. “I’m so excited that I get to dig in to this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realise that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character.”

Dracula is being produced by Hartswood Films for BBC One and Netflix, and will consist of three feature-length episodes. Filming is set to get underway in 2019.

Danish actor Bang gained acclaim for his role in Ruben Ostlund’s Palme d’Or-winning The Square last year, and was most recently seen the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
