Oh boy. The 1988 comedy classic Big starring Tom Hanks is the latest Hollywood commodity headed for a remake, and will come in the form of a television “event series” from Enlisted’s Kevin Biegel and Mike Royce.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series has landed a script plus penalty commitment at Fox and is going to explore “what it means to be an adult and what it means to be a kid – and how in today’s world, those things are more confused than ever.” Biegel and Royce will write the script and serve as executive producers on the half-hour comedy.
Honestly, I’m not sure what to make of this news. Big is literally one of my favorite films of all time, so I have absolutely no desire to see it remade and given a contemporary spin. However, I’m not ruling out the possibility of the series being successful, and don’t deny the appeal of telling a similar story in a modern context. The idea of a child waking up in an adult’s body likely looked very different in 1988 than it does now, especially with geek culture on the rise. There’s also a lot of talent behind the series, so I’ll try my best to remain cautiously optimistic. As long as they don’t update Zoltar and make the fortunetelling coin machine an App, I might just give it a shot.
