Highly anticipated co-op horror game Backrooms Media has just had an Early Access launch date of 10th September announced on IGN. With over 250,000 Steam wishlists and more than 400,000 trying out the game’s short demo Backrooms Media has quickly gained attention due to its connection to the viral internet creepypasta Backrooms. A trailer released by IGN can be seen below.
For the uninitiated, the Backrooms are a creepypasta that originated from 4Chan back in 2019 and is described as an ‘endless, unsettling liminal spaces—a maze of eerily familiar yet distorted environments’ that is accessed by sliding out of reality. This has captured the imagination of many, including Hungarian student Patrik Nagy, the solo developer of Backrooms Media.
In Backrooms Media players enter a surreal world, a terrifying labyrinth of eerie, endless spaces, rooms and corridors filled with lurking horrors. Players can team up in groups of five and work together to navigate the labyrinth of rooms and passageways and use proximity chat to discuss their findings and ensure whatever entities are out there don’t find them.
Backrooms Media features:
- A liminal journey through a surreal world that blurs dreams and reality.
- Nostalgic VHS visuals from a bodycam that captures every moment in this space beyond explanation.
- Hyper-realistic graphics that deliver an immersive and unsettling experience, all powered by Unreal Engine 5.
- Online co-op with proximity voice chat adds tension by allowing players to whisper strategies to each other and avoid being heard by other entities.
- A powerful level editor allowing players to create and share their own nightmarish scenarios.
Backrooms Media launches on Steam Early Access on 10th September.
