Apart from small appearances by scientist Dr Henry Wu (B.D. Wong) and a brief cameo by Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm, the Jurassic World franchise has kept away from including legacy characters from the Jurassic Park series. This was until director Colin Trevorrow announced he would be including the original film’s three star characters – Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler, Sam Neill’s Dr Alan Grant, and Goldblum – for the upcoming Jurassic World 3.
In a recent interview with Empire, Trevorrow explained how the writers found an appropriate way to narratively include the three returning characters on-screen alongside Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing.
“We’d have had to come up with a reason why Ellie, Malcolm and Grant all went to the theme park on the exact same day it broke down – again,” he explains regarding their absence in Jurassic World. “The next film allows the legacy characters to be a part of the story in an organic way. Emily Carmichael and I call it Jurassic Park VI because it is.”
“You start asking the most basic questions: who are these people now?” Trevorrow continued. “What do they make of the new world they’re living in, and how do they feel about being part of its history? Ultimately it will be in collaboration with the actors. They know and love these characters. We’ll do it together.”
Jurassic World 3 will be directed by Colin Trevorrow and produced by Steven Spielberg with a cast including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern, along with new additions DeWanda Wise (She’s Gotta Have It) and Mamoudou Athie (Patti Cake$). It is set for release on June 21st 2021. However, there is currently no specific plot details on the film as of yet.
