Villordsutch reviews Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #1…
The Ninth Doctor is BACK with a brand-new miniseries: WEAPONS OF PAST DESTRUCTION!
Leaving World War II behind, The Ninth Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack discover that Time Lord technology, lost in the wake of the Time War, is being sold on the intergalactic black market!
Now the threat of a NEW temporal war brews on the horizon. Can the Doctor stop history repeating itself?
It’s odd – if not distressing – to think that Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor first appeared on our television screens ten years ago! I can still remember the Doctor taking Rose’s hand and pelting down the basement of Henrik’s, running away from the plastic emotionless faces of the Autons. The Ninth Doctor only lasted for one season and went away, but he started the ball-rolling for the entire generation for NuWho; now however he finally returns with Rose and Captain Jack in tow.
In charge of the writing duties of this Titan Comics release is Cavan Scott and it’s quite clear from reading this comic that Cavan knows Eccleston’s Doctor extremely well, so well as a matter of fact that I could even hear his Manchester accent (though a purest would say Salford) echoing around the inside of my skull.
We enter the story with the Doctor attempting to show Jack and Rose his favourite planet (it’s not Earth today) which for whatever reason is now a pile of floating debris. In the midst of the Doctor’s confusion a ship appears and pulls the TARDIS aboard, much to the Doctor’s disgust. With the Doctor storming from the TARDIS to see what’s going on he comes across a number of Robots who proceed to take the crew of the TARDIS captive. Using a bit of know-how and Jack’s “Vortex Manipulator” they are soon out of the robots grasp as well as the room. However all becomes unwell again as the ship falls under attack, leaving the Doctor and company at the mercy of both the attackers inside and outside the vessel.
Cavan Scott has truly hit the proverbial nail on the head with this opener. It’s fast, it’s entertaining, there’s mystery and it’s Doctor Who straight to the core. You couldn’t ask for a better opening issue really. Along with this we’ve got the splendid artwork from Blair Shield which compliments Scott’s story so well. It also manages to create perfect glimpses of the opening season and moments that we wish could have actually been made possible within the opening season.
Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor is off to a brilliant start and you need to be reading this.
