Tai Freligh reviews Heroes: Godsend #2…
Farah Nazan… Former soldier and tough protector of Malina… But how did she become the woman she is today? Farah’s origins are explored in Godsend.
From Titan Comics comes a series of comic stories that serve as prequels to the Heroes Reborn television show on NBC. They plan on coming out with several five issue character studies. The first of which was Heroes: Vengeance (check out my reviews of #1, #2,#3, #4, #5) and focused on El Vengador. The second, which just launched, is called Heroes: Godsend and is about Farah Nazan.
Issue #1 introduces Farah Nazan. As a young woman, Farah was living and studying in New York. Her parents died in the Twin Towers on 9/11. She slowly discovered her camouflage powers and used them to defend the community against racists. Farah takes on part-time work at Primatech. In her past, we learn about her training with her Uncle Omar in Pakistan.
The second issue follows Farah as she has gotten into a bit of a routine of using her powers to protect people against hate crimes in New York. Her true identity is kept hidden, but the public and the media know her as Godsend (after the name the grocer she saved in the first issue called her). She has no social life and no boyfriend, despite her friend XX wanting to hang out with her, but ruining the moment by asking about the bruises on her knuckles. She heads to her boring office job as an unpaid intern at Primatech Paper, working with Noah Bennett.
One day she sees Noah being attacked by somebody (who looks an awful lot like the Haitian) and tries to intervene. Bennett’s assailant blocks her attack because he can see her. It turns out that Bennett is in the ruse as it is a test to see if she would use her powers. Noah takes her to see Angela Petrelli, who has a proposition for her. She needs somebody broken out of prison who can help heal her little 2-year-old granddaughter Malina. Malina has been prophesied to save the world, but she’s very sick. Farah agrees to help and breaks into prison to help the prisoner escape. She succeeds and at the very end, he introduces himself as Linderman.
Side note- Linderman was a shadowy figure from the original Heroes television show who helped found The Company and who also was an evo who could heal anyone with just his touch. It should be noted that he was involved with the mob and was rather ruthless and cold in the TV show, planning to destroy New York with the help of Petrelli, but his plan was foiled. It will be interesting to see how he plays out in the remaining issues as he is not mentioned at all in the Heroes Reborn show and we only see a grown Farah Nazan and Malina.
The end of the comic shows us the main cover and variant cover for issue #2 as well as a short feature on how the artist developed the look for Farah. There is also a feature on how artist Roy Allan Martinez developed the variant cover for this issue, from initial sketch to inking and coloring. Finally, the issue closes with the main cover for issue #3. This was another excellent issue, moving along at a good pace and keeping it interesting. I give issue #2 a score of 10 out of 10.
Issue #3 is available in May, 2016.
