Villordsutch reviews Jorund: Honor-Bound…
JORUND: HONOR BOUND follows a young norseman named JORUND who is tasked by his vile mother to regain their family’s honor by killing the viking that murdered his father.
Anybody that has read an article of mine before will have noticed that the final couple of lines of all my pieces you’ll see the word “Viking”, so when this comic arrived in the Flickering Myth inbox it was decreed by Odin himself that I should be allowed to review it.
Jorund: Honor-Bound is an indie comic from the pen of James Mulholland, set in a small Viking village, amd we enter the story as Jorund’s father is meeting his fate at the hands of another villager called Kar within a fighting ring. It’s at this point his mother’s want for vengeance becomes so vicious that every waking moment she hounds Jorund to kill Kar, even turning to training her much younger son – called Skap – when Jorund refuses to appease her want for blood. The mother’s desire however is far too wicked to be stopped and eventually she manoeuvres the pieces which corrupt Jorund’s life forever.
This is the debut graphic novel from James Mulholland, along with the artwork from Julio Falkenhagen and colours by Armand Jasmin, and it isn’t a bad debut graphic novel either. It had the memory attached to it – for myself – of the brilliant Saturday morning French cartoons you’d sometimes stumble across, which would have a story such as this and artwork not so dissimilar. At just over sixty pages and limited dialogue in each panel it’s a fairly quick read too; however I am left slightly unsure if this is a one-shot or if this is the start of a series by the end of the book.
Jorund: Honor-Bound is an enjoyable debut, and picking this up would be a present to give to yourself today.
Jorund: Honor-Bound is available now priced €4 from here, you can also find more information from James Mulholland’s Facebook Page. It will be available in print at a later date.
